On Why I Love AudioBooks

If there is one thing I miss being single it’s having the time to read books. I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this before but I am a voracious book reader. Books are my first love ever since I discovered them at the age of 6. Sadly, when I got married and had kids I had to let go of my love of reading books. I found out there just wasn’t any time to indulge in my hobby. I came to this realization after I bought several books a few years back and ended up not reading them. And when we moved houses and found out that my collection of books was the heaviest among all our things I stopped buying books altogether.

Recently, I started buying books again although the Kindle version at Amazon. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find the time to finish the books from cover to cover the way I used to do. I felt guilty reading when I have my family and the house to take care of, not to mention my online work. So for a year I may have only read about two Kindle books all in all.

That changed this week when I discovered Audiobooks.com. Audiobooks lets you listen to the audio version of popular books out in the market. So instead of reading the book and tiring your eyes you can just hit play and listen while you are doing something else. Isn’t that amazing? I chanced upon this site while I was looking for the Duggar’s book – yes, the one with 19 kids – because I subscribed to Discovery Home and Health at SkyCable and I was amazed at their lovely family. So as I was looking online for a copy of their book I discovered Audiobooks have them on file. The best thing of all, the books are narrated by the authors themselves so you feel like they’re actually talking to you. That’s better than reading a book, isn’t it?

If you don’t have time to read books just like myself, why don’t you give Audiobooks? They have a ¬†wealth of books in their library and these books are bestsellers that I think we shouldn’t miss. You can sign up now and you’ll be eligible for 7 days of free unlimited access. Yes, that’s unlimited access to all their books! After 7 days if you still want to try out their service you can subscribe for only $25 per month. I think that’s already a good deal because at Audible.com you can get only two books at that same amount.

Right now I have finished listening to “A Love That Multiplies: An Up-Close View of How They Make It Work.” It took me two days because that’s 10 hours worth of audio! I’m so glad I tried its audio version because if I bought the ebook version I surely wouldn’t be able to finish it at that speed, or maybe I wouldn’t be able to finish it at all. I have learned so much about their parenting style and I can’t wait to try it out with my kids. That’s what I love about books, you can learn so much from them.

Now I’m on my second book, “Success Principles: How to Get From Where You Are to Where You Want to Be,” by the famous bestselling author, Jack Canfield. It’s about 7 hours of audio and I can’t wait to listen to the wealth of information in that book.

After my 7-day free trial expires I am seriously considering continuing my subscription even though it would cost me a few dollars each month. Different people have different hobbies, maybe some will spend their extra money on a famous cigar shop but for me, there’s nothing more I love than books. I want to be able to finish at least one or two books a week and audiobooks have made it possible for me. The best thing about this whole experience is I can share the knowledge with my husband. Since I have been playing the Duggar’s book nonstop for the past few days he cannot help overhear it. Who am I kidding – he couldn’t ignore it even if he wanted to! In the end, we both agreed that we have learned a lot from their parenting style and vowed to get better in that department. We may still not understand why they choose to have so many kids but we have to concede that they are doing a marvelous job at raising their kids. We hope the things we learned from their experience we can also put to work in our family, especially the way we raise our children.

I stopped reading books too when I had my daughter. I’m just now starting to read again. I tried audiobooks but either I get sleepy or I start to do other things or something. I prefer ebooks. Of course a paperback is best but it’s too much clutter now.

Really, you hate reading? Hubby’s in charge of music in the fam. Since he listens to a lot of music I don’t have my own playlist anymore. Whatever he listens to I have to listen to also. haha!

Oh hai, Paula. I’ve tried listening to Tina Fey’s Bossypants, but I didn’t got a lot from it because I did it at work. So I guess it’s pretty kindof relaxing and more productive when done before sleeping (but the eyebags! XD).

You bet! I tried that too while blogging but it was no use. I had to switch it off or I couldn’t do any work.

Oh wow. I feel for you. I also had a brief reading hiatus when I had the Little One. I was just too stressed out trying to fit in all the activities I had to do in the day. Good thing when we moved to SG, I finally found my reading groove back. Baby’s a little cooperative too. I just try to squeeze in a few pages from time to time.

Good for you that you are able to still follow books through audio. =)

I love Audible. I listen to my audiobooks while ironing my & my husband’s clothes.:) My favorites are David Sedaris’ audiobooks. It’s like listening to him live on his reading sessions.

Audiobooks is a great idea, like when you’re traveling and it’s hard to read on a bumpy road or you simply just want to close your eyes but not sleep yet. I would still like to read the conventional way but this is really a wonderful alternative. :-)
