Signs of Belly Button Infection in a Newborn

Had quite a scare tonight when I saw some blood on baby Zach’s pajama.  Upon further inspection, I found out that it came from his umbilical cord stump which has not yet fallen off.  I wanted to go to the doctor right away for fear of an infection but it was already in the middle of the night.  So what was poor mommy to do but to google about newborn belly button infection online and see if I need to worry.

According to the websites I browsed here are the signs of belly button infection in a newborn:

  • Fever
  • Redness or inflammation of the umbilical area
  • Pus, blood, or fluid begins to leak from the area
  • Strange smell around the umbilical area

I breathed a sigh of relief because all of the symptoms were not there except for the blood. Even if there is blood I also need not worry because it is normal. What’s not normal is if the blood continue to ooze even after wiping which is not the case.

Tomorrow, we will go to the pedia to have his belly button checked.  I hope I’m right and that there’s no need to worry.
